What could be the reason of Synovitis in my knee?

I have been facing problems with my right knee from the last couple of weeks. I have had problems with this knee when I used to do sports but it was nothing serious. My problem is that when I sit cross legged or with my knee bent, it starts to feel big, like there is fluid inside it. It also starts to feel numb and and there is pain over the top of the knee cap. My doctor told me on the phone that it could be due to inflammation in synovial membrane, but he can’t do anything before he checks my x ray report. In the meanwhile, I want to know about this problem from people who have a similar problem. What could be the reason of Synovitis in my knee? What can be done to get rid of this problem? I was wondering if you could help me out.
